6 Essential Outfit Details for your Session

You've picked the date, the time, and the perfect location, now comes the hard part. In my best Grinch voice "But what will I wear???" The options feel endless, and honestly, it can get a little overwhelming. Don't stress, I've got you! I love shopping and styling almost as much as I love photography, and the second I have a session vision in my head, I'm sprinting straight to Pinterest to make a style board.

As your photographer, my goal is to make sure your photos not only look beautiful, but also feel like you. Your outfit plays a huge part in the overall vibe and aesthetic of your gallery. Over the years (and through plenty of trial and error!) I've learned what works best and what can make or break a session. So, I've put together this quick guide to help you nail the details.

Don't worry - these aren't hard rules, just helpful tips to make your photos shine!

I. Color Coordination Over Matching

Gone are the days of everyone wearing the same white shirt and jeans! Instead, think coordinated, not identical. Choose a color palette that complements each other such as soft neutrals, earthy tones, or warm hues as they tend to photograph beautifully in outdoor and lifestyle settings.

If we’re shooting in a field, barn, or pasture, think of colors that pop gently against nature (like sage green, cream, rust, or denim). For beach or downtown sessions, lighter tones and flowy fabrics work wonders.

Start with one outfit you love (usually mom’s!) and build the rest of the family around it.

II. Textures Are Your Best Friend

Layers and textures bring photos to life. Linen, lace, knits, denim, or suede, all those little details photograph so well and add depth without distraction. Avoid overly shiny materials (they reflect light harshly) or loud logos that pull attention away from your faces.

For my western and equine sessions, mix those textures! A flowy dress with leather boots, or a denim jacket over a soft cotton top can give that perfect rustic, authentic feel.

III. Movement Matters

Photos come alive with movement, twirls, hugs, walking shots, and those in-between moments. Choose clothing that moves with you! Flowy dresses, skirts, or loose-fit tops photograph beautifully. Stiff or restrictive outfits can make posing feel forced, and we want those natural, candid smiles.

Think of it this way: If it feels good when you move, it’ll look good when you move.

IV. Mind the Details

Accessories can elevate your look, a simple hat, a statement necklace, a belt, or even a cozy scarf for fall sessions. But keep it intentional! Every added piece should complement, not compete. Shoes matter too, skip the bright sneakers unless they’re part of your personality (then let’s roll with it!)

For equine or outdoor sessions, consider how practical your choices are for walking through grass, fields, or barns. Comfort always wins.

V. Think Seasonally

What looks amazing in summer light may not translate the same in winter tones. Choose colors and fabrics that fit the season, soft pastels for spring, golden warmth for fall, deep cozy tones for winter. This not only makes your photos feel natural, but also helps everything blend seamlessly with your environment.

For fall family sessions, I love deep greens, burnt orange, and cream. In summer, dusty blue and beige look stunning against sunlit fields.

VI. Keep It You

At the end of the day, your photos should feel like you. If you’re a barefoot-in-the-grass kind of person, let that show. If your family lives in jeans and boots, embrace that! Authenticity always photographs best. Don’t overthink trends, timeless beats trendy every single time.

Remember, when you feel comfortable and confident, it shows in every photo.

Relax, You've Got This!

Styling doesn’t have to be stressful. Think of your wardrobe as part of the storytelling, your session is about connection, not perfection. If you’re ever unsure, send me photos of your outfit options before your session. I’m always happy to help you style and coordinate your looks!
